Why are methyl donors bad?

Unread post by Sofa »

Why are methyl donors bad? Does anyone know the mechanism? Does it affect neurotransmitters?
Is there any real science behind it?

I dont understand how someone can permanently crash from B12 for example.

Those "methyl donor" crashes are quite common on the internet, but it's difficult to find some science and mechanisms behind them. It's mostly a personal experience of people feeling truly awful and venting it online.

You cannot downplay the power of nocebo either, for example, all those symptoms below were reported in controlled studies of people taking inactive substances:
"nausea, stomach pains, itching, bloating, depression, sleep problems, loss of appetite, sexual dysfunction, severe hypotension"

You would better not worry much about your B12 theories, and give it some time, if it does not improve. Better to get checked, if you are truly B12 deficient, it can also give all sorts of problems like the ones claimed to be "crashes from it":

"Symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency are often subtle and evade easy diagnosis. Non-specific complaints may include fatigue, shortness of breath, palpitations, memory loss, and mood changes. Anemia and numbness or tingling of the extremities represent more advanced issues. "
