Confused about my condition and why NAC made it worse

Unread post by Pizzaiscool88 »

Unfortunately my country lacks seriously in health care. You get prescribed medications without proper examinations, they dont understand your problem etc.
Much worse is it when it comes to sexual health. In a population of 40 million there are virtually no sexologist and no one understands sexual dysfunctions. Everything is taboo.

I've been forced to understand myself and try to seek solutions for myself for many of my health issues. 5 years ago or so I got a complete sexual dysfunction from depression. My functions just shut down. I didn't care back then because I was very very depressed and had anhedonia. I also got complex ptsd.
Now having come a long way in my recovery of depression and C-PTSD I finally can prioritize my sexual health since I'm no longer between life and death. But the issue is that I was prescribed anti depressants ( Escitalopram)last year (without an examination from the psychiatrist and this was many years after my recovery from depression . I came to him to ask about my ADD and he told me since retalin is banned in my country I should just take anti depressants).

Few months ago I discovered PSSD. A permanent sexual dysfunction resulted by anti depressants who do nerve damage. However upon asking a specialist in sexual dysfunction online she told me I can't know if its pssd or not since my sexual dysfunction existed before I took the anti depressants.

Somehow I was sure I had pssd because it was exactly the symptoms of genital anesthesia, no arousal , so sensitivity and absolutely nothing nothing. I've been following online what people have experimented with to ease their pssd.
I have no access to the supplements mentioned most of the time. Barley cbd oil. But I could find NAC and after that I got a lot worse than I was.

I'm just confused over all this. I searched online and there is nothing dangerous about it but it made it way worse after only three days.
The thing is that even in countries where health care is equipped there is a shortage in knowledge of pssd. So I have no where to turn and I'm genuinely wondering what went wrong

First of all, there is no evidence PSSD involves nerve damage. I also agree with the specialist that it's hard to tell what problem is causing what symptoms in your case. Not to downplay your symptoms but many of them could be psychological in origin. Taking NAC for 3 days probably isn't long enough to cause serious side effects, so while you should probably avoid NAC in the future, consider alternative explanations of your change in symptoms.

Just speculating here, but if NAC did worsen your symptoms then it could mean that it increased glutamate activity in your brain too much. NAC can also lower vitamin B12 which might cause symptoms if your levels were already low-ish. Lastly, there is a connection between NAC and alterations in gut bacteria but the science is not well understood there. But again with only 3 days, it's hard to say if it really effected you.

If I were you, I would focus on addressing your psychological issues and give PSSD more time before you resort to experimental treatments.

Hi dude..

I took NAC for a week and it seemed to make things worse at the time and I thought I might’ve ruined what I had! For a few weeks I felt worse and worried about it.. anyway I went back to baseline and I have had one or 2 days since that where I’ve had perfect days sexually! They are rare but at least it shows that things can be good. Try not to worry too much as I wasted my time panicking I’d made things worse for nothing (like I have many times over the last couple years)

Now I realise some days are bad.. most days are below average.. and some days are good! Hopefully one day things will get better permanently! Some people take months some take years to recover! No one knows why!

NAC destroys my emotions and pleasure response too. Stay away. You will return back to baseline soon.

Thanks.
I forgot to mention that I'm a woman. Read that female sexual dysfunction is much more difficult to fix than a male

Where did you read that? I thought I read somewhere it was the opposite (more chance of women recovering)

Nac inhibits glutamatergic neurotransmission, blocks NMDA receptors which contributes to emotional flatness and anhedonia. It is crash inducing supplement.

Adding to the above a lesser known fact - NAC induce EAAT2 by epigenetic mechanism, a reuptake transporter gene expressed mainly in a limbic system. Increased reuptake lowers glutamate level in synapses, which has negative effect on neuronal excitability and glutamate associated neuroplasticity
