Hello,
I've lurked here for quite some time, and decided to register an account to address a thread viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3971 that brought up a question: where are all the recovery stories from the 1980s and 1990s?
It's a fact that the internet was not as ubiquitous until the World Wide Web became the gold standard starting in the mid 90s, and it took a few years until the internet had fully caught on as we entered the 21st century. However, there was a precursor to the WWW: Usenet. Usenet was essentially a forum system developed in 1980 and connected computers in much the same manner as the WWW. While it was still rather niche, it's historically significant as the origin of internet forums, and terms like FAQ, flame, sockpuppet, and spam all originated with it. And, lucky for us, Google archived a LOT of the Usenet under Google Groups. https://groups.google.com/my-groups You can search through a ton of old Usenet messages, going as far back as, yes: even 1980. And it's the place to look for older PSSD stories.
First off, I already searched the term 'PSSD' and went as far back as 1994, and saw no mention of the term in the context of Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction in the 80s or 90s. The earliest mention of PSSD as it pertains to Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction that I could find was in 2007, https://groups.google.com/g/alt.support ... Ldaazr7lkJ, which lines up with PSSD communities coming together around the mid to late 2000s. If you can find an earlier mention, then do post it!
There are countless search terms that could be used, so I encourage everyone to investigate and find any historical mentions of the persistent or permanent effects of SSRIs as reported by users.
Older PSSD Stories (1980s/1990s)
Re: Older PSSD Stories (1980s/1990s)
I searched through that and found results from 1993. But they are talking about the sexual dysfunction when they are taking the SSRIs. Not PSSD. Buspirone, Cyproheptadine, Bupropion, bethanechol, Amantadine etc are the ones they suggest to alleviate their symptoms. Article "https://groups.google.com/g/sci.psychol ... R0CXrCsawJ" says he did some index search until 1980 and he mentioned bethanechol
choloride (Urecholine), or cyproheptadine HCL (Periactin) the ones most suggested for alleviate sexual symptoms.
Here I attached few articles I found.
https://groups.google.com/g/sci.med.psy ... L83IB0QLIJ
https://groups.google.com/g/alt.support ... vCTrcT_fUJ
https://groups.google.com/g/soc.support ... NH732GRGUJ
https://groups.google.com/g/alt.test/c/ ... QnekUgt_4J
https://groups.google.com/g/alt.support ... 1gafXROJ0J
So we have evidence that from 40 years no major understanding regarding sexual side effects of SSRIs.

Re: Older PSSD Stories (1980s/1990s)
You will not find anything named PSSD before 2000s for simple reason. The acronym was created in the mid 2000s by A. Csoka. It was not named before.
Look for the names of specific substances and check every post. There is no other way
If you want cases - Sonny ( the first forum admin) is the case from 90s, Healy mentioned the PSSD-like case reported to FDA in the 80s. Yahoo SSRIsex contained many 90s sufferes. As myself ,I saw a discussion about the persistent symptoms at bob forum and heard there was IRC group dedicated to antidepressants permanent toxicity.
BTW In my opinion the Post SSRI Sexual dysfunction is not good term. It's misleading, as it points to PSSD affecting only intimacy, while in fact the syndrome affects a lot more ( emotional blunting ).
